BETA Academy | Cameron Smith | Operation Octagon XV | Team Lloyd Irvin | 30 Days Free In DC

Welcome back everyone! Today we look back at an intense weekend for BETA Academy, but more specifically, Cameron Smith!

As most of you already know, Cameron Smith, a BETA Academy/Team Lloyd Irvin Competitor, had what was, to him and many others, a memorable Saturday night at Operation Octagon XV in Sterling,VA!

Cameron with brother Collin & sister Casey

Looking back on this weekend’s events, one thing was more evident than ever before…BETA Academy stacked the house and represented very loudly at Operation Octagon XV! As for Cameron, he had a remarkable weekend, starting with his girlfriend of many years surprising him with her arrival two days prior to the fight. On top of that, his family arrived from Georgia on Friday with another surprise for Cameron…His older brother Collin Smith, who is a BJJ Purple Belt and runs Georgia Southern University MMA and is also a mixed martial artist from Statesboro, Georgia!

This particular surprise was one that gave Cameron that extra boost of confidence going into this Mixed Martial Arts fight against, then, undefeated mixed martial artist Alex Coates. Aside from his family, friends and these awesome surprises, Cameron had the support of an entire team in BETA Academy!

With this kind of support, also came pressure, pressure to perform. Cameron, however, handled himself like the cage veteran that he is! He kept his cool and calm demeanor in order, he stayed focused on the task at hand. What was that task, you ask?

SIMPLE…WORK THE SYSTEM!!

Healthy and ready to go!

In fact, the system worked so well, the BETA Academy/Team Lloyd Irvin warrior, Cameron, ended his fight in 1:26 of the very first round!

Cameron finished the fight in 1:26 of the 1st round!

With this win, Cameron Smith improved his Mixed Martial Arts record to 7-2!

Cameron came out patient and looking to counter early, managing to slip a few punches in the process. Cameron then engaged the clinch looking to work THE BETA SPECIAL OF THE DAY – MUAY THAI!!! After a few take down attempts by Cameron’s opponent, one being successful, Smith found himself working off of his back and in side control.

The guys from BETA Academy after Cameron's fight!

After defending a few punches, the JIU JITSU light came on and Cameron was able to transition back to full guard, where he took advantage of a free arm and cinched in the fight winning arm bar!

BETA was on point!

Once the fight was over, Cameron’s emotions were evident. He pumped his fists, continuously yelling “YES”, all the while, BETA Academy was going crazy, coaches were reaffirming the big win with cheers and hugs, but then came the moment that I, as a parent and son, appreciated the most…the reunion with his family!!

To think, they came from Georgia to support Cameron and what they got was not only a big win but they also had the opportunity to witness what was Cameron Smith’s first fight stoppage!!

Here is a video of Cameron Smith right before his fight and the moments after the win!! Once again, Congratulations to Cameron Smith for putting on an awesome showing at Operation Octagon XV!!!

Sijara Eubanks BJJ Seminar | BETA Academy | Team Lloyd Irvin | Sarj In Charge

Nyjah Easton, Sijara Eubanks, Yasmin Sewgobind, Rita Floyd

On Sunday, July 24th, at Team Lloyd Irvin DC affiliate school, BETA Academy, in Washington, DC, we had the honor and privilege of working with one of the sports’ most highly decorated and respected grapplers, Sijara “Sarj” Eubanks!

JT Torres, Master Nakapan Phungephorn, Mike Easton, Jimmy Harbison

The attendance was awesome and the energy was at a high point, in what was a muggy and hot day in the District, but that didn’t take away from the awesome techniques displayed on the mats of BETA Academy! In very few words…SARJ WAS IN CHARGE!!!

The participants that showed up to this highly anticipated Brazilian Jiu Jitsu seminar at BETA Academy included big names from Team Lloyd Irvin, such as, JT “Spiderman” Torres, Jimmy “Jah” Harbison, Rachel Demara, Nyjah Easton, Frank “The Crank” Camacho, newly signed UFC Bantamweight Fighter, Mike “The Hulk” Easton and many more…

I know for a fact that everyone who attended BETA Academy on this day left this BJJ Seminar adding great techniques to their repertoire and surely upgrading their respective skill set. It definitely was an awesome day, to say the least, and the turnout was a testament to the respect that Sijara has earned in her BJJ career!!

Rita Floyd, Nyjah Easton, Rachel Demara, Sandra Benet

Sijara, however, was nervous going in to this BJJ seminar because this was, amazingly so, her first go-around at teaching a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu seminar! She displayed great poise and instruction while going over her system and those in attendance truly appreciated the high level techniques that she shared with us at BETA Academy!!

On behalf of everyone who attended, Kru Melanie, Khun Kru Nakapan and the entire FamLI at BETA Academy, we would like to thank Sijara for an extraordinary seminar and we can’t wait to have her back!!

UFC Fighter, Mike "The Hulk" Easton

Cisco’s Fight Corner: Gym Hygiene

Gym Hygiene

Listen to your corner, or else...

So today’s post is a continuation of a conversation I had after class last week. We all sat around and swapped horror stories about all of the interactions we’ve had with poor gym hygiene. I love you all too much to recount those tales here, but I will say that we are all very lucky to train at a clean, well-maintained gym like BETA Academy.

Gym hygiene is extremely important and it goes far beyond just making sure things simply look clean. While the staff does a great job of keeping the facility clean, it is up to each and every one of us to do our job to ensure that we don’t contribute to the problem.

First of all, for those of you that are new to training MMA, BJJ or Muay Thai you have to understand that training in combat sports requires a much higher level of hygiene than other sports. While some of you nastier individuals out there may have gotten away with wearing dirty shorts to practice for the entirety of your youth rec soccer career, that type of laziness wont fly at BETA Academy. It is not only about not offending my delicate sensibilities (which are in fact extremely delicate), but about the fact that you can expose your training partners to all types of infections, bacteria, grossness, etc.

Your gear bag smells like an armpit burrito

Here are a few tips for gym hygiene:

  • Wash your gear (shorts, gi, shirt, etc.) after every practice!
  • Wash your hands immediately after wearing your gloves (especially before you eat).
  • Be sure to shower ASAP after practice. For those of you that refuse to shower at the gym, please do so the second you get home. Your XBOX will be waiting for you when you get out.
  • If you have any sort of infection/open wound DO NOT expose your training partners! Take some time off and heal.
  • In the words of Instructor Danny, “Getting ready for training should be like getting ready for a date”. Be sure to shower, brush your teeth, clip your nails, and all other sorts of efforts to maintain proper hygiene. You will end up getting a lot closer to someone than you would after sharing an appetizer combo at Chili’s.

If you see one of these on your body, contact a doctor immediately

Make gym hygiene a priority, because  nobody wants to have to explain why an alien life form is growing out of their body to their friends/girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife/significant other/cat.

BETA Academy Kids | Jr. Grappling Championships | The future is NOW!

Oh yes, BETA Academy, THE FUTURE IS NOW!!!

The young Champions of BETA Academy have finally arrived to the competition scene!!! So everyone take notice, for these very Champions are coming to a tournament near you!!

It has been quite a journey, to say the least. We, at BETA Academy, started the ‘Champions’ Grappling Program just under 4 months ago and in those four months, all of the kids in the program have demonstrated solid Focus, Discipline, Respect, Confidence and GREAT Teamwork, which are all qualities and traits that are earned within the Kids’ Program through the Merit Badge System at BETA Academy! With these great qualities, the BETA Academy ‘Champions‘ have taken their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skill set to the next level!!

That’s right, COMPETITION TIME!!! As some of you may know, Coach Isaac, myself and 7 of our BETA Academy ‘Champions’ were in Woodbridge, VA at the 2011 Jr. Grappling Championships “Capital Battle” on May 28th, to see how our ‘Champions’ stacked up against the competition in, what was, their very first tournament.

Yes, BETA Academy’s ‘Champions’ were very anxious to get the day started but when fight time came, the anxiousness quickly became a bunched up pile of nerves. We, however, welcomed these feelings for our ‘Champions’ and, boy, did it pay off!! These young Medal Chasers were there to do one thing…To show everyone that the Champion Grapplers of BETA Academy meant business! Both, Coach Isaac and myself were confident that the BETA Academy ‘Champions’ would do just fine at this tournament. However, the parents…oh, the parents…they were super nervous for their kids, as was I for Mikey, my 8yr. old son who also competed. All I remember telling the parents was, “Don’t worry, your child will surprise you!” They looked at me with that “not-so-sure” look, but deep down they knew that their children were prepared for battle!!

The day was long and the work was hard but our ‘Champions’ showed their mettle the entire day!! They cried, they sweat, they got banged up, but above all…THEY FOUGHT!! They fought through all of it, with no hesitation and when all was said and done, the joy on each of their faces was truly rewarding to all of us as parents and coaches! So, to sum it all up, I would like to say congratulations to all of the ‘Champion’ competitors of BETA Academy!!

We ended the day with a good amount of hardware to take back to BETA Academy! Here are the names of each of the ‘Champions’ that left it all on the mats on May 28, 2011:

  • Miguel Escobar Jr. – After winning his second fight, Mikey was paired up in the Quarterfinals against teammate, Peter Oelriches, where he was defeated 2-0. Mikey showed great heart and determination on the competition mat and was a great teammate throughout!! Good work, Mikey!!
  • Storm Templeton – Gold Medal – 67 Lbs. Tiger (NO-GI) Division | Silver Medal – 60 Lbs. Lions (Gi) Division
  • Peter Oelriches – Bronze Medal – 70 Lbs. Tiger (NO-GI) Division | Silver Medal – 70 Lbs. Lions (Gi) Division
  • Samantha Ebell – Silver Medal – 90 Lbs. Lions (Gi) Division
  • Alicia Pilgrim – Silver Medal – Girls Absolute | Gold Medal – 110 Lbs. Lions (Gi) Division
  • Karl Pilgrim – Gold Medal – 68 Lbs Lions Division (GI)
  • Isaac Rosenblum – Silver Medal – 98 Lbs. TIger (NO-GI) Division | Silver Medal – 98 Lbs. Lions (Gi) Division

So, as you all see, we did really well for our first time!! BETA Academy would like to thank all of the parents and families of each of our ‘Champions’ for all of their hard work and dedication to the team!! Without them, none of this would be possible! So, incase you forgot, TEAM LLOYD IRVIN…WE DA BEST!!!!

Cisco’s Fight Corner: Front Kick to the Face!

Cisco’s Fight Corner: Front Kick to the Face!

Listen to your corner, or else...

So today’s post is a little behind the times, but it is something that I have been thinking about for some time now and I figured I might as well share it with the world. Besides, the news cycle in the MMA world is limited and this is what you get , so deal with it.

First things first let me say that what you are about to read is a nugget of knowledge that most in the fighting world would kill for (you’re welcome). At BETA Academy we train in a variety of martial arts such as Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA with some of the most knowledgeable coaches and fighters in the nation. It is only because I know that you are ready as a member of the BETA Academy family, that I will reveal the secret behind the front kick knockout.

Steven Seagal himself revealed the secret of the front kick to me after I defeated him in a best of 101 series of rock, paper, scissors.

Fear the purple pajamas

Now for those of you who haven’t seen any of the ridiculous front kick knockouts, let me bring you up to speed. Anderson Silva knocked out Vitor Belfort with a front kick knock out and credited Steven Seagal with teaching him the move. A few months later Lyoto Machida knocked out Randy Couture with a jumping front kick (aka the Karate Kid crane kick) and again credited Steven Seagal for inventing the move. Up to speed? Good.

Vitor has a foot fetish

Now these spectacular finishes bring to light a series of questions regarding the viability of traditional martial arts in MMA, the apparent omnipotence of anything that Steven Seagal touches, and countless other issues that I don’t have the time to address.

What we will concentrate on here is the reason why the front kick works.

You're the best around...

First off we have to acknowledge the skill of the practitioners. You can’t just walk off the street and knock out a former UFC champion like Vitor or Randy. That being said, this technique has as much to do with the practitioner as the opponent. To understand the success of these kicks you must understand 2 main points.

Both Vitor and Randy have a strong boxing background and it shows in their stance. They “sit into their punches” meaning they are much lower with their knees bent ready to deliver heavy hands. This differs from traditional Muay Thai or Karate stances, because Muay Thai and Karate fighters traditionally stand taller. So for those of you keeping track that was point # 1.

Point # 2 is about the guard. In the boxing guard there tends to be a small opening down the middle (especially with MMA gloves). This space can quickly be closed in order to block punches (normally jabs, crosses, hooks and uppercuts). The guard against an uppercut or a body shot is a little slower than  the guard against jabs and crosses, but it usually works out, because the hooks and uppercuts tend to be a little more obvious/slower than the straight punches. When you throw kicks into the mix, the guard is similar. Elbows block the ribs and the hands guard the head. Normally.

So for the slower audience, lets put the two together. Anderson and Lyoto went against guys with a boxing stance and a boxing guard. As Randy and Vitor bent down to load up into their punches they lowered their level. Their hands were up preparing to guard punches and ready to move to the sides to block kicks. The speed of the front kick exploits the split second hole down the middle of the guard, because it comes from below without the telegraphing that often comes with the uppercut. That combined with the quick snapping concussive motion of the traditional front kick, provides us with the perfect recipe for a spectacular knockout.

The UFC 65 lbs Division Champion

Disclaimer: I’ve never met Steven Seagal and this is just my analysis of the handy-work of some amazing athletes. I will say that I still think I could beat Seagal in rock, paper, scissors. Now go practice your front kick.
